In accordance with his commitment during the handover of the Ministerial Position from Mr. Dito Ariotedjo to Mr. Erick Thohir on September 19th, 2025, the Minister Erick Thohir stated that he would focus more on improving the sports sector. Shortly thereafter, on September 23rd, 2024, the Minister Erick Thohir announced the revocation of the Ministerial Regulation No. 14 of 2024 on Management Standards for Sports Organizations in the High-Achieving Sports Sector, which had sparked controversy among national and regional sports organizations. The Minister Erick stated that the revocation of the regulation was part of an effort to simplify regulations and increase effectiveness, as well as to support further transformation.
For the IADO, the Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir’s decision is a huge relief. Not only has the regulation sparked criticism from WADA, but it has also somewhat complicated the quality and effectiveness of IADO’s performance. WADA’s criticism stems, among other things, from IADO’s legal status being equated with that of national sports organizations in general, despite Law No. 11 of 2022 on Sports clearly stating that the criteria for its organizational activities differ from those of national sports organizations in general. While the IADO understands the critical stance of most national and regional sports stakeholders toward Ministerial Regulation No. 14, it has chosen to remain silent and wait for developments.
Hopefully, this breakthrough at the start of his leadership will bring fresh and constructive momentum to the development and improvement of Indonesian sports achievements. Mr. Erick Thohir’s experience and track record in various international sports organizations such as the IOC, FIFA, FIBA, OCA, and others have demonstrated his distinctive leadership style.
